Nelson City Council has voted in favour of signing on to the Sue Big Oil class-action suit, but with an important caveat. If the lawsuit is not certified by the B.C. Supreme Court as a class action by 2030, Nelson will withdraw its pledged contribution. Read More

The Village of Pemberton Council voted unanimously to join a Sue Big Oil lawsuit against fossil-fuel companies. The vote also approved allocating $1 per resident from Pemberton’s Speĺkúmtn Community Forest Legacy Fund to support the case. Pemberton is the 10th BC municipality to join the lawsuit. Read More

Cumberland Village Council voted unanimously to allocate $1 per resident and work with other BC local governments to bring a class action lawsuit against global fossil fuel companies to recover a fair share of the communities’ climate costs.  Cumberland has recently had to borrow $2.5 million to make its water system climate-resilient, just one example of the major climate costs facing Cumberland and other BC communities. The District of Sechelt will support the Sue Big Oil campaign in its filing of a class action lawsuit against global fossil fuel companies. The decision commits $1 per resident (Sechelt has about 12,000 people) as a contribution to the campaign. Read More

Port Moody city council voted Thursday to support a potential class-action lawsuit against large fossil fuel companies. The city is calling on the provincial and federal governments to enact legislation that holds fossil fuel companies financially liable for climate-related harms caused by their contributions to climate change. Burnaby Councillors have voted 8 to 1 in favour of joining the Sue Big Oil campaign, with a Councillor citing the financial challenges “our future generation will face” from climate change. Burnaby is currently the largest city to join. (Article in Burnaby Now) Read More

Major fossil-fuel firms have also pledged support for international climate efforts, but they have lobbied against climate laws and regulations they have publicly claimed to support, documents newly revealed by the US House Committee on Oversight and Accountability committee show.
